The move also comes after the Carolina Panthers signed defensive lineman Trevis Gipson from the 49ers' practice squad.
Ferrell, who recently worked out alongside three other defenders for the 49ers, is reuniting with the Bay Area team for a second stint.
The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Ferrell out of Clemson with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Raiders before joining the 49ers in 2023, where he started all 17 games. Since then, he's had brief stints with the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Chargers, the latter of whom released him on October 14.
Across seven NFL seasons, Ferrell has recorded 160 total tackles (25 for loss), 54 quarterback hits, 17 sacks, 12 passes defensed, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
