The signing is expected to become official on Wednesday, coinciding with the 49ers' first practice of the week as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Piñeiro, 29, has a career record of 111 made field goals on 126 attempts since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the then-Oakland Raiders in 2018. He has also successfully converted 116 of 126 extra point attempts.
Piñeiro most recently spent three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. In 2024, he made 22 of 26 field goal attempts and 33 of 35 extra points.
The 49ers selected Moody in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Over the past two seasons, he has missed 12 field goal attempts, including two in Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks. His inconsistency ultimately led San Francisco to move on from the kicker.
