Baker Mayfield will not be with the Cleveland Browns next season, but there are not many teams remaining that are in need of a starting quarterback. Mayfield appears to have two in mind.
Mayfield publicly demanded a trade last week just before the Browns landed Deshaun Watson. One report revealed he had strong interest in joining the Indianapolis Colts, but they acquired Matt Ryan on Monday. So what’s left? According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Mayfield’s camp has had “preliminary discussions” with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers.
Sources told Howe that there is no timetable for the Browns to trade Mayfield. Both the Panthers and Seahawks pursued Watson and missed out, so they are still looking for solutions at the QB position. That doesn’t necessarily mean either team wants Mayfield.
Mayfield is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He is owed $18.8 million, which is a lot for a player who was wildly inconsistent during his four seasons in Cleveland. The Browns also have no leverage, as teams know they can’t keep Mayfield. One report this week shed some light on just how low Mayfield’s trade value has gotten.
Mayfield will turn 27 next month. He’s a former first overall pick, so the potential is obviously there. Both he and the Browns need at least one team to believe a fresh start would benefit Mayfield.
