Report: Broncos Invite Ex-Cowboys WR Brandon Smith to Minicamp
USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos added a 13th wide receiver to its offseason roster Monday, signing Nick Williams. And No. 14 could be on the way.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson reported that the Broncos have invited former Dallas Cowboys WR Brandon Smith to the team's upcoming veteran minicamp.

A 2021 undrafted free agent, Smith was parked for his first two seasons on the Cowboys' practice squad. He appeared in seven exhibition contests; his highlight being a toe-tapping touchdown reception against the Seahawks last August.

The 6-foot-1, 218-pound wideout spent the 2022 campaign with the XFL's DC Defenders, totaling eight catches for 118 yards and one TD across six games.

An Iowa product, Smith boasts an impressive 81.5-inch wingspan and logged a 39.5-inch vertical jump, as well as a 4.62 forty time, at the 2021 Scouting Combine.

"Nice-sized receiver who flashes ability," Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline noted in his pre-draft scouting profile. "Sells routes, uses his hands to separate from defenders, and tracks the pass in the air. Adjusts to the errant throw, gets down to scoop up low passes, and possesses eye/hand coordination. Follows the quarterback across the field then extends his hands and nicely makes the reception on crossing patterns."

If brought aboard, Smith will have his work cut out attempting to crack a Broncos positional group with more than a dozen players ahead of him. It's possible — probable, even — that his acquisition would lead to the departure of another WR.
