Report: Budda Baker gave Cardinals ultimatum in February

Arizona Cardinals star safety Budda Baker requested a trade on Friday. However, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Baker gave the Cardinals an ultimatum months ago.

A team source told Schefter that, back in February, Baker informed the Cardinals that he wanted to be traded or receive a new contract making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

Baker has two years remaining on a contract extension inked with the Cardinals in 2020. He's due $13 million in 2023 and $14.2 million in 2024.

Arguably one of the best safeties in the NFL, he is hardly paid like one. Heading into the 2023 campaign, six safeties in the NFL will make more than Baker, per overthecap.com

Before news broke of Baker's trade demand, he caused some commotion on social media by deleting all mention of the Cardinals on his social media profiles. He also hinted at his unhappiness by posting an ominous tweet featuring a gif of Michael Jordan from "The Last Dance."

It's unclear whether the Cardinals plan to honor Baker's request. However, if he hits the trade market, Arizona likely won't have trouble shopping him.

At only 27 years old, Baker is still one of the league's premiere safeties. Last season, he recorded 111 tackles with two interceptions and seven pass defenses over 15 games with the Cardinals.

A second-round pick by Arizona in the 2017 NFL Draft, Baker has played six seasons for the Cardinals, being named to the Pro Bowl five times while earning All-Pro nods twice.
