Report: Cardinals narrow HC search, decision could come Monday

With Super Bowl LVII officially in the books, the Arizona Cardinals are expected to bring their head coach search to a conclusion soon. It looks like the weeks-long process could be down to just two candidates.

When the 2022 NFL season came to a close five franchises were in need of a new head coach. However, as February crosses the midway point, all but one team has found the man to lead them back to relevancy.

The Houston Texans hired DeMeco Ryans, the Carolina Panthers chose Frank Reich, the Denver Broncos traded for and signed Sean Payton and the Indianapolis Colts are reportedly finalizing a deal with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.

The Arizona Cardinals are the lone remaining team in need of a head coach, but that could change as early as Monday with the team reportedly narrowing down their search to two men.

Reports last week claimed the Arizona Cardinals would not complete their head coach search until after Super Bowl LVII. It seems that was done so the team could speak with Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Monday the team is expected to interview him today.

ESPN NFL writer Josh Weinfuss added to the speculation around the job when he also reported today that “the Cardinals have focused their head coaching search on Gannon and Bengals DC Lou Anarumo. The source also said Arizona could make a decision tonight (Monday).”

The Cardinals have already had a first and second interview with the Bengals’ defensive coordinator.

The team fired former head coach Kliff Kingsbury early in January after four seasons. Arizona was on an upward trajectory over the first three years with Kingsbury in charge, but in 2022 the Cardinals took a major step back by finishing 4-13.
