The Los Angeles Chargers have been such a disaster this season that Justin Herbert is being mentioned in trade rumors.
Herbert hasn’t played up to his standard this season, completing 59.4% of his passes for 937 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. A season ago, he had 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while leading Jim Harbaugh’s squad to an 11-6 record.
Although the Chargers have Herbert under contract through the 2029 season, fans are starting to wonder if he’ll be available via trade.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter spoke to a source on the Chargers about Herbert’s availability. Let’s just say he won’t be going anywhere next season.
“The person cut me off mid-sentence, stopped me in my tracks and said, ‘Let me be very clear about this: we have never even discussed that idea. Should we trade Justin Herbert has never been uttered in our organization, nor will it be.’ This is what the person said. … I didn’t even hear a ‘we will listen.’ They won’t discuss it, they won’t think about it,” Schefter said.
Before Schefter shared this update on Herbert, Fox Sports personality Nick Wright brought up a scenario where the New York Jets offer a package of first-round picks to the Chargers for their star quarterback.
“It’s absolutely on the board that the Jets have three Top 12 picks – their own first-round pick, the Colts’ first-round pick from the Sauce Gardner trade, and they get to pick Dallas’s first or Green Bay’s first, which Green Bay owes Dallas for Micah,” Wright said. “Do I expect at least two of those three teams to be really bad? Yes. If this Chargers’ year goes terrible, if the Jets call up the Chargers and say, ‘We will give you, not future picks, three picks you can use right now.’ And if you’re the Jets, you’re not like, ‘Hey, we’re not crippling our ability to compete with Herbert in the future because we’re not trading any future year’s draft picks.’”
It sounds like the Chargers are against trading away Herbert, but maybe their opinion will change if their nightmare season somehow gets worse.
