The Philadelphia Eagles lost to the New York Giants 34–17 on "Thursday Night Football," and afterward, a short exchange between A.J. Brown and reporters ballooned a storyline into something much bigger.

When asked if he’d taken part in a reported players-only meeting with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley earlier in the week, Brown replied, "I don’t recall a meeting," a line that prompted a swirl of media coverage.

By Friday, Brown attempted to downplay the narrative on social media, posting on X, "Just to clear this up. That wasn’t a meeting or a sit-down. I said 'I don’t recall' because it got painted like there was tension and Sa (Barkley) had to step in. That’s not true. I was walking to my car, saw them, and stopped to talk. Nothing more."

A new update from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on Saturday has added to the ongoing saga.

According to Russini, sources told her there was never a formal players-only meeting — more a quick conversation that got overstated in some accounts — lending credence to Brown’s comments on Friday.

A week ago, Russini had noted how both Brown and DeVonta Smith had voiced frustration about their usage, particularly in scoring opportunities.

Through six games this season, Brown has 25 catches for 274 yards and one touchdown; he produced a 109-yard, one-TD game against the Los Angeles Rams but otherwise has seen uneven production (five catches for 43 yards vs. the Denver Broncos; six for 80 vs. the Giants).

Brown is still getting targets, but not the consistent red zone volume his contract (3-year, $96 million) and reputation suggest.

In fact, he is on pace to finish the year with around 71 catches for 777 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, the latter two of which would be career lows by a wide margin.

Brown’s usage and the Eagles’ red zone distribution are storylines that will be monitored closely as the NFL season moves forward.
