Clyde Edwards-Helaire is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs. Per Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the running back is heading back to the team that drafted him, and where he won two Super Bowls.

“Sources: The #Chiefs are signing RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, bringing the 2x Super Bowl champion back to Kansas City and to the team that drafted him in Round 1,” Schultz posted on X. “CEH was with New Orleans last season.”

As Schultz noted, the former LSU running back returned to Louisiana to play for the Saints in 2024. However, it didn’t amount to much — Edwards-Helaire only played in two games for New Orleans, accumulating 46 rushing yards and 24 receiving yards for the franchise.

His time with the Chiefs was much more fruitful. They selected him in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. His best season came as a rookie, when he accumulated 1,100 yards from scrimmage (803 rushing, 297 receiving) in 13 games.

Injuries began to pile up throughout his time in Kansas City, however, and Edwards-Helaire appeared in just 10 games the following season. He lost his starting job to then rookie tailback Isiah Pacheco midway through the 2022 campaign and was placed on injured reserve 10 weeks into the season.

The 25-year-old bounced back to play in 15 games in 2023, albeit in a backup role behind Pacheco. Kansas City placed him on the league’s Reserve/Non-football illness (NFI) list prior to the 2024 Week 1 opener, and he subsequently joined the Saints.

“Love ya KC! A family I didn’t know I needed, y’all made a Kid from Baton Rouge dreams come true!” Edwards-Helaire wrote on X when he was originally released from the Chiefs. “To Chiefs Kingdom, it’s all love and the support I had in troubling times will forever be unmatched from you guys! With love!”

All in all, Edwards-Helaire has accumulated 1,845 rushing yards on 4.2 yards per carry and 12 touchdowns with the Chiefs, to go along with two Super Bowl rings. He’ll be hoping to add to that total in 2025.

Time will tell how much of an opportunity Clyde Edwards-Helaire has with the Chiefs. One thing is for sure, he’s happy to be back with Kansas City, and to have another shot in the NFL after a tumultuous year in 2024.
