The Baltimore Ravens and star running back Derrick Henry have reached a contract extension, per Adam Schefter. The deal with keep Henry in Baltimore for another two seasons.
The two-year and $30 million extension comes with $25 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons. That’s the largest deal in NFL history for a running back over the age of 30.
This comes after the Philadelphia Eagles and Saquon Barkley came to terms on an extension earlier in the offseason for a two-year, $41.2 million contract. That was record-setting as the largest for a running back in NFL history.
2025 will be Henry’s second in Baltimore and his 10th in the NFL, coming over after spending eight seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He’s also coming off his third straight Pro Bowl season in 2024, rushing for 1,921 yards and 16 touchdowns. Those 16 touchdowns led the NFL.
For his career, Henry has 11,423 yards and 106 touchdowns. He’s averaged 4.9 yards per attempt. He also has 174 career receptions for 1,651 yards and five touchdowns.
Combined with quarterback Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry made the Ravens one of the best offenses in the AFC. Along the way, Baltimore would go 12-5 and won the AFC North before eventually losing in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Buffalo Bills. Now, with Henry signed back on for another two seasons, the hope is that Baltimore will be able to get over the hump in the coming seasons and return to the Super Bowl.
During his college days, Derrick Henry played for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the legendary Nick Saban. There, at one point, Saban had a story about how he was never going to make it.
“There’s so many college guys that I thought this guy’s never going to make it, like when they’re freshmen, and then they would learn and grow and turn out to be really good players. Like, Derrick Henry, right? So he’s a freshman, and we’re doing a team pass drill, and he don’t know his ass from a handful of sand about pass protection, pass blocking, none of this… He didn’t pick up the right guy or something, and the offensive coordinator’s getting on him so bad, I’m like, ‘I feel sorry for this guy. I’m gonna go rub his neck a little bit,’” Saban said.
“And he says, ‘Coach, I don’t know anything about any of this sh*t.’ He said, ‘All they did in high school was turn around and toss me the ball and tell me to run with it. That’s all I know about football. So can you all have a little patience?’ From that standpoint, I mean that guy has went a long ways, but I’m saying there’s so many guys like that. It’s just amazing.”
Certainly, with time and patience, Derrick Henry became one of the best running backs that the NFL has seen. With his new extension, he’s also being paid like one of the best.
