Report: Dolphins hiring former All-Pro Sam Madison as cornerbacks/pass game specialist

A legendary Dolphins player from the past is returning to the franchise, this time as a coach.

Sam Madison is set to take over as Miami's cornerbacks coach and pass game specialist, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Madison will join the staff under new head coach Mike McDaniel, who has been applauded for his work in assembling his assistants.

Madison, 47, played nine seasons with the Dolphins. Over that time, he received two first-team All-Pro selections, two second-team All-Pro selections, and four Pro Bowl nods. He played the last three seasons of his career with the Giants, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 2008.

After hanging them up as a player, Madison took 10 years away from the NFL and worked as a TV analyst in Miami. In 2019, he was hired as the secondary and cornerbacks coach for the Chiefs. In his first year in Kansas City, they won the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs ranked eighth in the league in passing yards allowed (3,543) in 2019, but slid to 14th in 2020 (3,779). Last season, they ranked 27th in the NFL (4,273) in the category.

Madison replaces Charles Burks, who was initially reported to be staying with Miami but will instead leave for a similar role in Cincinnati, Schefter reports.
