Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz has been the subject of NFL trade rumors since last season, with many confident a deal this spring was guaranteed. With players reporting for training camp, Ertz might be staying in Philadelphia.
Ertz didn’t report for practices in May due to growing frustrations with the organization. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, efforts to negotiate a long-term deal went poorly last year. Philadelphia later attempted to move its star tight end before the NFL trade deadline and failed. When the offseason arrived, it was assumed Ertz was a goner.
But the situation seems to be changing. Whether due to the team’s asking price or both sides finding a way to resolve their differences, a trade now seems unlikely.
According to Sports Radio WIP’s Howard Eskin, there is a great chance Ertz will be on the Eagles roster for Week 1 and he is expected to report for training camp.
Not too long ago, both sides wanted to part ways. Multiple teams called and word spread that a blockbuster trade was imminent, but it never came to fruition.
The biggest issue was the asking price. Teams balked at general manager Howie Roseman insisting on a third-round pick. With rival clubs only offering a future fifth-round selection, Philadelphia now seems intent on keeping Ertz to begin the 2021 NFL season.
Entering a contract year, the Eagles are hoping Ertz can rebound after an injury-riddled season. It’s possible he returns to form, but there are growing expectations that Dallas Goedert will be the No. 1 tight end this season.
For now, the trade chatter seems to be over. But don’t be surprised if Ertz is one of the most recognizes names moved at the NFL trade deadline.
