Report: Interest in 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo 'lukewarm'

ESPN's Adam Schefter dropped somewhat of a bombshell on Wednesday when he reported "it's not a lock" the San Francisco 49ers will trade veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason so 2021 rookie Trey Lance can become the club's next starter. Schefter added that "Lance was probably further behind than people realized" this past campaign and is still "greener than people realize."

There may be more to the situation.

During what appeared to be a farewell press conference following the NFC Championship Game, Garoppolo made it clear he wants to go "where they want to win." However, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports that "interest in guys like Jimmy Garoppolo and Carson Wentz (of the Indianapolis Colts) is lukewarm as best I can tell."

That's not surprising regarding Wentz, as multiple individuals within the Colts have all but openly said they need an upgrade at the position this offseason. Indianapolis could even release Wentz when the new league year opens next month.

Garoppolo, however, is reportedly well-liked within the San Francisco locker room and helped the club get to within a game of a Super Bowl berth despite playing with a torn ligament and a chipped bone in his right (throwing) thumb throughout the playoffs. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier this month Garoppolo could stay above Lance on the depth chart so all involved could run it back for one more shot at a title, and Wednesday's developments suggest Shanahan wasn't merely being polite at that time.
