Report: Kansas City Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney Returns To Team After Creating Major Locker Room Drama
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs saw the return of Kadarius Toney on Thursday after a drama-filled week that started with the wide receiver being ruled out of the AFC Championship Game for “personal” reasons. The personal reason was explained to be the birth of Toney’s daughter.

Except maybe not.

Kadarius Toney claimed the Chiefs lied about his injury

As discussed previously by Andrew Kusleika with GH, Toney went on Instagram Live this weekend and said he was not hurt and the Chiefs were lying about his injury status. Per ESPN, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said this week Toney was “working through some things,” and the team was not making up the wide receiver’s injury:

“He’s been on the injury report, [so] that part is not made up by any means,” Reid said.

Lying about Toney’s injury status would make the Chiefs susceptible to a punishment from the NFL.

The Chiefs did not practice Wednesday but listed Toney as a full participant for Wednesday’s projected practice status. However, the team kept him on the injury report for a personal reason. It was unclear if the personal issue had to do with Toney’s outburst this weekend or the birth of his child.

Toney’s injury came after a bad game

Toney’s comments from the weekend are especially curious because of the timing of his hip/ankle injury popping up on the injury report. Toney’s last active game for the Chiefs was against the New England Patriots when he dropped a pass that turned into an interception. Mahomes was frustrated after the play.

Reid was asked if the Chiefs would consider benching Toney after the Patriots game. Reid said “we’ll see” about benching Toney but added he wasn’t “down” on the former first-round pick.

A few days later, Toney’s name popped on the injury report.

Toney returned to Kansas City Chiefs’ practice Thursday

According to Pete Sweeney with Arrowhead Pride, Toney was back to practice with his teammates on Thursday.

Per Sweeney, the Chiefs are keeping the personal designation for Toney this week:

The #Chiefs no longer list WR Kadarius Toney with an injury, only the “personal” designation. Will be interesting to see his official status in the Super Bowl injury report later Thursday afternoon. In our brief look, Toney was without a helmet catching passes in his own warmup of sorts.

Video posted by Aaron Ladd shows Toney working out at practice Thursday. He had a bright smile while he was catching passes.

We’ll see if the Chiefs make Toney active for the Super Bowl after the drama he has caused the team this season and postseason.
