Kirk Herbstreit to serve as analyst on Amazon's 'TNF'
ESPN broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Kirk Herbstreit has called some NFL games over the past two years, and the longtime analyst has now landed more of a full-time position at the professional level.

Herbstreit has reached an agreement with Amazon to serve as the analyst for “Thursday Night Football,” according to Peter King of NBC Sports. Recent reports had indicated that Amazon was pursuing Herbstreit.

Herbstreit, 52, serves as the top analyst for college football games on ESPN/ABC alongside play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler. King says he will likely continue with those duties in addition to calling “Thursday Night Football.”

Now, the real task for Amazon will be landing a top play-by-play announcer to pair with Herbstreit. Al Michaels was considered the favorite for that job at one point, but he is said to be weighing other options. Joe Buck’s future at FOX is also a bit uncertain after Troy Aikman left for ESPN.

Herbstreit likely was not Amazon’s first choice. The tech giant was reportedly willing to pay one current NFL head coach a massive sum of money. Herbstreit certainly has plenty of experience calling big games, so he should do just fine.
