After meeting to discuss a new contract, Micah Parsons told Jerry Jones to call his agent David Mulugheta and finalize the terms of a deal to make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, Parsons confirmed to DLLS Sports’ Clarence Hill. Jones has not yet made the call.
Parsons had been searching for a new deal with the Cowboys throughout the offseason as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. Talks with Dallas were ongoing, but nothing came to fruition through the early part of the offseason program.
Parsons said he planned to be at training camp no matter what happened during the negotiations and confirmed he would be in Oxnard. He also previously said the situation is in “the owner’s hands.”
“I will be there!” Parsons wrote via X. “I haven’t missed a mini camp in 4 years! Even though the contract is not done, I have teammates and a playbook! I’m preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp! But it’s in the owner’s hands. I’m ready to win a Super Bowl!”
The market has taken a few turns this offseason as both Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett signed lucrative extensions, although Jones reiterated the lack of urgency to get Parsons’ contract done. That added to the sense that Parsons would likely become the highest-paid defensive player in league history.
Speaking with reporters Tuesday, Parsons reiterated Jones will be the one to make the call on an extension. That involves a conversation with Mulguheta – of whom Jones said he previously didn’t know his name.
“That’s what it kind of comes down to,” Parsons said, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “He gives the green light. He’s the owner. He’s pretty much what it takes to get anything done anywhere around here. It’s up to him.
“But I’m going to still keep playing football. I’m going to keep showing up and preparing like any other year.”
Micah Parsons remains the focal point of the Cowboys’ defense as he enters his fifth season in the league. The 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, he has made the Pro Bowl each of his first four years and is a two-time First Team All-Pro selection. He also earned Second team All-Pro honors in 2023.
Today was the first day of Dallas’ mandatory minicamp, which runs through Thursday. The Cowboys will open training camp July 25.
