Roger Goodell has served as NFL commissioner since 2006 and seemingly won't be leaving that post anytime soon.
Ben Fischer and John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reported Friday that Goodell is negotiating what would be the fourth contract extension of his tenure holding pro football's highest single office. It's believed he'll sign the agreement "in the coming months."
"He’s at the top of his game right now," an unnamed owner said of Goodell for the piece. "Why would we want him walking out the door?"
Meanwhile, NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy said that "there is no truth to this report" regarding the executive who turns 63 years old on Saturday.
Goodell's current contract is set to expire in March 2024, but SBJ reports a new extension could add two to four years to the deal. SBJ adds Goodell earned a whopping $63.9 million for each of the past two seasons. It's unclear if he'd receive a raise as part of the extension.
Sources also told SBJ that Goodell "has played a role in" the "lack of a clear successor" for the position.
Despite recent controversies involving the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders, among other clubs, few can deny the NFL continues to grow as the nation's most popular league with no competitor serving even as a close second.
Back in 2020, Goodell vowed to work with health experts and the NFL Players Association to hold seasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While games were postponed and shifted on schedules, the last two campaigns ended on time and with Super Bowl contests played in front of paying customers.
