The Carolina Panthers might already have their new starting quarterback in Sam Darnold. However, the team has not ruled out selecting a quarterback in the 2021 draft.
Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are expected to go first and second overall, leaving Justin Fields, Mac Jones and Trey Lance as the three remaining top QBs.
According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the Panthers are "not enthralled" with Jones or Lance, who are considered the fourth and fifth-best quarterbacks in the draft. That would leave Fields as the QB Carolina might be targeting.
Reports over the past month have indicated the Panthers are in love with Fields, so if he's available with the eighth overall pick, it's hard to imagine the franchise passing on him.
If Fields isn't available, it's likely Carolina trades back in the draft. Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said Friday that he's "very open" to moving the eighth overall pick depending on how the first seven selections go.
