Report: Patriots HC Bill Belichick has 'shopped' Mac Jones to multiple teams this offseason

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has shopped quarterback Mac Jones to multiple teams this offseason, according to a report from Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

Per Florio, while the "full list of potential destinations isn't known," some of the landing spots mentioned to him as possibilities are the Houston Texans, Las Vegas Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Commanders. The Texans and Commanders have serious questions under center, with Davis Mills and Sam Howell currently atop their respective depth charts.

The Bucs may have a quarterback battle this summer after adding Baker Mayfield in March to compete with Kyle Trask and the Raiders appear set to roll with Jimmy Garoppolo, who they signed in March as well. It was also reported on Tuesday that Las Vegas was signing longtime New England quarterback Brian Hoyer to a two-year deal, presumably to back up "Jimmy G."

Any or all of the quartet of teams could look to the NFL Draft later in April to improve their quarterbacks room, however.

"Obviously, a trade hasn’t occurred yet. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen. A team hoping to draft a quarterback could pivot to Jones, if that team doesn’t get the guy it wants," Florio wrote. "The Raiders are the ones to keep watching. Jimmy Garoppolo's contract lands in the low-end of middle class for starters, and Jones has two years left under a slotted rookie deal, before his fifth-year option would apply."

Florio reports that Patriots owner Robert Kraft's apparent liking of Jones has complicated the situation regarding the team's future at quarterback.

After a Pro Bowl rookie season in 2021, Jones battled injuries and poor play in his sophomore campaign. He finished the year with a 65.2% completion percentage, 2,997 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 14 games (all starts), while his quarterback rating dropped nearly eight points to 84.8.

Even though it's been reported multiple times that the Patriots won't be pursuing former MVP Lamar Jackson this offseason, that talk doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon, especially with the latest rumors on Jones.

With 2022 fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe already signed with New England through 2025, he appears to be Jones' main competition for the starting gig, if they're both on the roster this fall.
