Report: Patriots not currently interested in free-agent CB Richard Sherman

The New England Patriots are not currently interested in free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer (h/t NESN's Dakota Randall).

However, Breer notes that if New England's secondary doesn't look good over the next several weeks, it "would be interesting" to see if Bill Belichick gives Sherman a call.

The Patriots are currently without 2019 Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, who is on the physically unable to perform list. Gilmore is also in a contract dispute with the Patriots and it's unclear if he'll play with the team this year as trade rumors continue to swirl.

Gilmore is in the final season of a five-year, $65 million contract and will become a free agent if he cannot reach a deal with the Patriots.

New England is currently relying on J.C. Jackson, Jonathan Jones, Jalen Mills, Joejuan Williams and Shaun Wade at cornerback. Sherman would undoubtedly be an upgrade at the position.

The 33-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He was limited to five games last season due to various injuries but was named a Pro Bowler in 2019 after recording three interceptions, 11 passes defensed and 61 tackles.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, multiple teams have called about the veteran defender in recent days, including the 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints showed interest in the five-time Pro Bowler this offseason but were unwilling to meet his pricey contract demands.
