The Josh McDaniels head coaching rumors surface toward the end of nearly every season. This year is no different.
McDaniels is one of the most successful offensive coordinators in the NFL, so it's no surprise that he's reportedly generating "early buzz" to become a head coach in 2021, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.
"McDaniels is ready to take his second shot, even if that second shot isn’t perfect," Breer writes.
The 44-year-old has been linked to a number of head coaching positions over the years and even took a job with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018 before having a change of heart and deciding to remain with the Patriots. He also reportedly was a finalist for the Cleveland Browns' job last winter before the team hired Kevin Stefanski.
Breer reported last week that the Los Angeles Chargers, who were just blown out 45-0 by the Patriots on Sunday, could have interest in hiring McDaniels to replace Anthony Lynn. A move to Los Angeles would be very logical for McDaniels, too, who would have the opportunity to work with one of the best young quarterbacks in Justin Herbert.
However, if the Chargers fire Lynn and want McDaniels, they'll face some hefty competition. The Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans and Detroit Lions are in the market for a head coach. The New York Jets also could join that list.
McDaniels, though, isn't the only person generating some buzz ahead of the playoffs. Breer says Falcons interim head coach Raheem Morris and former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell also are generating interest.
