The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season just got a lot more interesting. Aaron Rodgers has officially signed with the team. While there have been debates on exactly what the 41-year-old quarterback brings to the team, he is certainly an upgrade from what they had on the roster. The challenge now is to make sure the offense has enough weapons to succeed. They traded away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, but did acquire DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. Reports indicate the Steelers are poking around the league trying to acquire another offensive playmaker.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported soon after the Rodgers news that the Pittsburgh Steelers would continue to try to add to the team. They want to add “one more weapon,” according to the NFL insider, and have been making calls around the league. He confirmed that the team inquired about tight end Jonnu Smith and tight end Kyle Pitts, who both have been in trade rumors this offseason. Pittsburgh also brought in Gabe Davis for a visit, but he left without a deal, indicating his recovery from his knee injury might not be progressing well.
A popular target is New York Jets receiver Allen Lazard. Rodgers loves to play with players he knows. Lazard burst onto the scene in Green Bay before following Rodgers to the Jets. It would likely not take much to bring him to Pittsburgh, but it remains to be seen whether they are interested or not.
The top end of the offensive depth chart isn’t bad by any means. Metcalf is a quality veteran receiver, even if there are some questions about his route running. Jaylen Warren has proven to be a quality running back, and the team drafted Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson in the 2025 NFL Draft. Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington are two quality tight ends who have proven they can be a part of a good offense.
Beyond that, it’s very thin, especially at wide receiver. Calvin Austin III is the WR2 currently on the roster. While the speedster has shown flashes during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, fans would feel better if he were a little further down the depth chart. At this point in the offseason, the options are limited, but the team could still keep an eye on the trade market once the season starts.
It’s funny to me that the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking for a playmaker after trading away Pickens. The trade was less about his abilities and more about his behavior in the locker room. They will have to keep their options open and hopefully will be able to find the right player to fit their offense.
