Report reveals status of Browns QB Deshaun Watson vs. 49ers

It is looking more and more likely that the Cleveland Browns will be without starting quarterback Deshaun Watson on Sunday when they take on the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers.

While the Browns have made no official designation on his game status, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported on Thursday that Watson will in fact miss Sunday's game. If he does, it will be the second consecutive game he has missed due to a shoulder injury.

He has not practiced all week due to the injury and was listed as a "did not participate" in the Browns' latest injury/practice report on Thursday evening.

In Watson's absence, it is expected that veteran PJ Walker will get the start.

Cleveland started rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson in a 27-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens just before their bye week. He completed just 19-of-36 passes for 121 yards and threw three interceptions in the game.

Walker has started seven games in his career, all with the Carolina Panthers, and has posted a 4-3 record in those games.

He has thrown five touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his brief NFL career.

No matter who starts, this is far from an ideal situation for the Browns.

The 49ers look like the NFL's best team, have a dominant defense and are coming into Sunday's game with a 5-0 record while winning four of those games by double digits. The best-case scenario for the Browns is that an injured and far less than 100% Watson is somehow able to start. That does not seem like a smart idea given how much the Browns need to rely on him long term. It makes no sense to let one game (one game they are heavy underdogs in anyway) override that.

If he is unable to go, they will have to choose between two backups who would seem to be overmatched on paper against the defense San Francisco will bring to the stadium. The Browns are 2-2 through their first four games in a close AFC North Division.
