While speaking with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan revealed that he and recently hired head coach Mike McCarthy have had "good communication" with 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers about Rodgers' future and the Steelers' quarterback situation.
Later in the day, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter spoke on his podcast about Rodgers' status.
"It's Aaron Rodgers, so you never fully know, but it sounds like he's more likely than not to be back," Schefter explained, per Troy Montgomery of Steelers Depot. "Feeling is, he'll be back. Feeling is, should be mid-March. Feeling is, it should be Pittsburgh."
Interestingly, a report from last week indicated that there was only a "minuscule" chance that Rodgers would return to play for the Steelers or any team. It was previously suggested that Rodgers teased in December that the 2025 season would be his last as an active player.
Khan also said on Tuesday that he did not expect Rodgers' latest free-agency journey to go "like it did last year," when the future Hall of Famer waited until June to officially put pen to paper on his contract. It seems that Khan was telling the truth.
"The belief around the league is that the feeling is he's supposed to give an answer by mid-March," Schefter added about Rodgers. "We're technically on the Aaron Rodgers clock. Many people thought there was no chance he'd be back. It certainly sounds like it is an absolute consideration."
Perhaps Rodgers is eager to reunite with McCarthy, the signal-caller's coach when the two were with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 through much of the 2018 season. Maybe Rodgers truly thinks that a Steelers team that went 10-7 before it suffered a blowout wild-card playoff loss to the Houston Texans is one solid offseason away from competing for more than a playoff spot.
A "mid-March" decision should give the Steelers time to pivot if Rodgers rides off into the sunset of retirement or signs with a different club, such as the Minnesota Vikings. As of the final Wednesday of February, it continues to appear as if Rodgers' return to the Steelers is the inevitable end to this story.
