Report: Steelers Have Interest In Trading For Buccaneers WR

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver corps has undergone a significant transformation. Just last season, the team relied heavily on Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, but the landscape has shifted. With the addition of Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka, and Tez Johnson, drafted over the past two years, the Bucs now boast one of the league’s deepest and most talented wide receiver units.

The Buccaneers have been bolstering their roster around Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, consistently targeting wide receivers through the draft and occasionally exploring free agency to add depth and talent to the position.

While some draft picks didn’t quite live up to expectations, others have delivered as reliable contributors, even if they haven’t been game-changers.

Trey Palmer, a sixth-round pick from 2023, fits this mold. He’s reportedly caught the attention of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are looking to shore up their struggling wide receiver corps.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver situation is a mess. They acquired DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks, and shortly after, they traded their young star George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, and now they’re looking for someone to help on the outside.

Beyond Metcalf, the Steelers’ current wide receiver depth chart features Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Roman Wilson, and Ben Skowronek. Notably, the team didn’t address the position in the draft, instead adding two undrafted free agents to the mix.

In stark contrast to Pittsburgh’s struggles, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are loaded at wide receiver. With the recent additions of Emeka Egbuka and Tez Johnson, Trey Palmer’s role is likely to shrink, making him potentially expendable. Given the presence of Sterling Shepard on the roster as well, Palmer’s path to significant playing time appears slim unless injuries create opportunities.

With only two seasons under his belt, Trey Palmer still has developmental upside despite modest production so far. While route running has been a weakness, he’s shown promise with reliable hands, strong ball tracking, and elite speed – skills that could complement DK Metcalf well.

A potential trade for Palmer would likely come at a low cost for the Steelers, who would gain a player with upside still on his rookie contract. For the Buccaneers, trading Palmer could be a savvy move, allowing them to capitalize on their depth at wide receiver and potentially accumulate more draft assets for the future.

However, Scott Reynolds of Pewter Report contradicted the rumor, stating that the Buccaneers haven’t received any inquiries from the Steelers about Trey Palmer. Despite the conflicting reports, a potential trade could still benefit both teams.
