Report: Stephon Gilmore, Patriots to have contract discussions closer to training camp

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore did not report to mandatory minicamp because he is not happy with his current contract, which will pay him $7 million in 2021. 

While things haven't changed, it appears the two sides could reach an agreement as training camp approaches. 

Appearing on "SportsCenter" Thursday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler provided an interesting update on where things stand between Gilmore and the Patriots.

"Sources I have talked to around the league suspect Gilmore and the Patriots will get together, have discussions closer to training camp and potentially hammer out a deal," Fowler said, according to WEEI's Ryan Hannable. "See where things go because Gilmore is not thrilled to be playing on $7 million this year. He needs a new deal in the worse way."

Fowler added that there hasn't been many trade discussions involving Gilmore because the Patriots need him on their roster. He also said a new deal for Gilmore could be similar to the three-year, $50 million contract ($30 million guaranteed) Darius Slay signed last year with the Philadelphia Eagles. 

Gilmore is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, winning the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year award with a career-high six interceptions and 20 pass breakups.

The 30-year-old has been vocal on social media, emphasizing that he's one of the best at his position and should be paid as such.
