At 41 years old, Drew Brees' time in the NFL likely is winding down, and the New Orleans Saints will be looking to replace him the moment he announces his retirement. Their search for a new quarterback may not be so difficult, though, because they may have Brees' replacement already on board for the 2020 campaign.
The Saints signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston to a one-year deal this offseason, but he's not exactly who Fox Sports analyst Jay Glazer has in mind.
"No smokescreen, he’s the guy," Glazer said of former Brigham Young University quarterback Taysom Hill in his weekly mailbag for The Athletic. "Sean Payton loves him but it’s not just him, the whole team loves him, not just Sean Payton. Watch a Saints game. When he’s in the game, watch the other players on the sideline, watch their reaction. They all get up and stand on the sidelines to watch him. I think Sean was always hoping to unleash him on the league without anyone seeing him before but now we’ve seen it with Lamar Jackson. He’s a bigger Lamar Jackson. No, it’s not a smokescreen. He likes him that much, he’ll be the guy. He’s with the perfect coach for that."
Hill has been with the Saints since 2017, but has been more utilized as a jack of all trades, spending time at many different positions in Sean Payton's offense.
However, Hill hasn’t exactly been productive as a passer in the opportunities he has received in a limited capacity. He completed 6-of-13 attempts with 119 passing yards, one interception and a 46.6 quarterback rating in 37 games. It's likely those numbers played a role New Orleans making Teddy Bridgewater its starting quarterback when Brees suffered an injury during the 2019 season.
So although Glazer suggests Hill is the answer in the post-Brees era, there's reason to question his passing capability in the years ahead. There's also no denying New Orleans brought Winston on board for a little competition at quarterback in the future, so it'll be interesting to see how things shake out.
