Report: Texans release RB Duke Johnson

The Houston Texans traded a third-round pick for running back Duke Johnson in 2019. On Friday, he was released by the franchise, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

By releasing Johnson, the Texans save a little over $5 million, according to Over the Cap. The 27-year-old would have become a free agent after the 2021 season.

Johnson spent two seasons with the Texans, running for 645 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 659 receiving yards and four TDs.

It's unclear which teams might show interest in Johnson, but NESN's Zack Cox points out that the New England Patriots could pursue him if they lose James White in free agency.
