REPORT: Tua Fires Agent; No Plans to Hire Another One

Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa fired his agent a few months ago and is currently moving forward without one, with no plans to hire another one at this time, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

“Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa parted ways with his agent, Ryan Williams, several months ago and said this week that he has no plans to hire a new one at the moment,” Barry Jackson wrote. “That certainly could change in the future if Tagovailoa decides he needs one. But for now, he’s not actively seeking an agent.

“In February 2023, Tagovailoa hired Williams and his Athletes First colleague, Austin Lyman, to replace Leigh Steinberg, with whom he parted ways weeks earlier.

“Williams and Lyman negotiated Tagovailoa’s four-year $212.5 million contract extension 14 months ago. That contract runs through the 2028 season.

“Tagovailoa joins Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and Chicago’s Caleb Williams as prominent quarterbacks who do not have a certified agent.”

Last August, Tua signed a 5-year deal worth $235.5 million with a max value of $244.5 million with incentives. And it is $171.6 million guaranteed in the first four years, and there are two void years at the end of the contract.

Since signing the contract, Tua hasn’t lived up to the money he was paid, and the Dolphins’ team record is under .500. He has also missed numerous games with various injuries since signing his new deal.

With the Dolphins having a 1-3 start, there is discussion that if Miami has a poor season and fires both Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier, the new regime hired to replace them may move on from Tua after this season, incurring a substantial salary cap hit in 2026.

If Tua is let go after the season, I would be stunned if he didn’t hire a new agent, as trying to sign with another team as a free agent without representation is difficult and some would say would be career malpractice.
