Report: Urban Meyer assembling coaching staff in case he takes Jaguars gig

Urban Meyer hasn't officially been named head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the job is reportedly his for the taking.

The Jaguars met with Meyer on Friday to discuss their head-coaching vacancy, and now the former Ohio State head coach appears to be preparing to take the position. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Meyer has been assembling a coaching staff in case he decides to become the next head coach in Jacksonville.

The Jaguars and Meyer are expected to decide on his potential future with the franchise at some point this week, Schefter adds.

Meyer found tremendous success while coaching the Florida Gators and, more recently, the Buckeyes. In seven seasons at Ohio State from 2012 to '18, Meyer went 83-9, winning the College Football Championship in 2014.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported earlier this week that Meyer is looking to be paid $12 million per year to coach at the NFL level. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport later reported the $12 million price tag is "inaccurate."

The Jaguars fired Doug Marrone on Monday and have since interviewed Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Atlanta Falcons interim head coach Raheem Morris. San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is expected to meet with the team on Saturday.

With the Jaguars holding the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the franchise must select a head coach who will work well with Trevor Lawrence, who is projected to be Jacksonville's selection.
