Report: WFT agrees to two-year, $8.75 million extension with Taylor Heinicke

Ron Rivera is unsure who will start at quarterback for the Washington Football Team in 2021. However, the franchise has locked up one of its quarterbacks early this offseason, indicating that he may get a shot at starting if all else fails.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Washington has signed Taylor Heinicke to a two-year, $8.75 million extension. There are also incentives in the deal.

Heinicke was Washington's fourth-string quarterback behind Kyle Allen, Alex Smith and Dwayne Haskins in 2020. However, when the team's playoff game rolled around, Allen and Smith were injured and Haskins was released, paving the way for Heinicke to start.

In a 31-23 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Heinicke completed 26-of-44 passes for 306 yards and one touchdown against one interception. He also ran for 46 yards and a score.

Heinicke went undrafted out of Old Dominion in 2015. He bounced around several NFL teams before he went to the XFL, where he did not play a single snap for the St. Louis Battlehawks. He was later signed to Washington's practice squad.
