Even though the Buffalo Bills are failing to meet expectations, head coach Sean McDermott is reportedly not on the hot seat.
"Asked if there was any chance [owner Terry] Pegula would fire McDermott, two of the sources replied 'Zero,'" wrote The Athletic's Tim Graham. "The other two sources said they would be shocked if Pegula made such a move. All four sources have intimate knowledge of the Pegula-McDermott relationship."
McDermott — who signed an extension in June — has a 68-41 record in seven seasons as Bills HC and helped them win three consecutive AFC East titles over the past three seasons.
The team's Super Bowl window might be closing, though. Buffalo (6-6) has lost four of its last six games and is out of the playoff picture. The New York Times simulator gives the Bills a 14 percent chance to make the postseason.
Combined with heartbreaking playoff losses over the past two seasons, the fan base is starting to lose its patience and point the finger at the HC.
"Fan confidence in Sean McDermott has never been lower," wrote Graham. "All that, compounded by the agony of those previous letdowns, is why many Bills supporters want him fired."
Not all blame falls on McDermott. The Bills have lost star players to injury, such as cornerback Tre'Davious White (Achilles), while QB Josh Allen is tied for the league lead in interceptions (13).
However, the Bills have yet to make a Super Bowl appearance under McDermott. He might need an improbable playoff push to prove he isn't holding the team back.
While Buffalo isn't planning to fire him, the organization might change its mind if he keeps losing big games and misses the playoffs this season.
