Reporter believes this four-time Pro Bowler could still sign with Jets

Despite a lull between the Jets and free-agent running back Dalvin Cook, the possibility that he signs with New York remains strong.

"It would make a lot of sense, it just seems like both sides are kind of waiting before they move toward a signing," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Sunday on "Inside Training Camp Live." "It would not be a surprise, though, if that ended up happening."

The four-time Pro Bowler recently visited with the Jets, and it went well even though they didn't strike a deal, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Signing Cook, who turns 28 on Aug. 10, would make sense for New York because he's one of the best RBs in the league. In 17 games last season, he rushed for the sixth-most yards in the NFL (1,173) and scored 10 TDs.

Jets RB Breece Hall showed promise as a rookie rushing for 463 yards in seven games but suffered a season-ending ACL tear, and New York hasn't activated him off the PUP list during training camp. Outside of Hall, the Jets need more RB depth. They finished 26th in rushing yards in 2022.

Cook has indicated New York might be his top option because he believes they're on the verge of becoming a contender.

"I think we're in a position with a team that's building something special," Cook recently said on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football." "And I want to be a part of something special. I wanna add to whatever they got going on."

Cook is reportedly seeking a deal worth around $10.4M annually. The Jets can afford this, as they hold $13.8M in cap room, per Spotrac.

So New York should try to sign him soon. Cook, QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Garrett Wilson would form a trio that may end the Jets' 12-year playoff drought.
