Once again, Lamar Jackson's contract situation with the Baltimore Ravens is a major talking point in NFL circles.
The Ravens must get a deal done sooner rather than later. Otherwise, Jackson can walk away as a free agent, and/or they'll have to take a massive $84 million cap hit next season.
That situation gives Jackson all the leverage. Essentially, he can ask for as much money and as many guarantees as he wants.
Considering that, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report believes Jackson is about to become the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, even topping Dak Prescott's annual average value of $60 million.
"At some point, a quarterback is going to push through the $55 million apron and actually top Prescott's deal. Lamar Jackson, a two-time MVP, could be just the one to do it," Knox wrote. "...It would be a massive surprise if Jackson's next deal doesn't put him on par with Stafford and Co., and there's a real chance he could surpass Prescott. The timing of a new deal is the bigger unknown."
All things considered, it's hard to disagree with this prediction. Jackson is a superstar and one of the five best quarterbacks in the game, and deserves to be compensated as such.
Granted, his lack of postseason success may cast doubts about his impending deal, but he's, by every objective and subjective measure, the Ravens' best shot at a Super Bowl.
The Ravens are entering a new era with Jesse Minter at the helm after more than a decade with John Harbaugh running the show.
And as much as they would likely want to see how the team fares with a new regime first, time is of the essence, and they can't keep kicking the can down the road for much longer.
