Reports: Bears Sign Scotty Miller to Practice Squad

Miller, a Barrington High School product, went unclaimed on waivers after Chicago cut him Sunday while trimming to 53 players. The 29-year-old signed with the Bears in May following a veteran tryout at rookie minicamp.

He caught seven passes for 65 yards in the preseason but lost out on the final receiver spots as Chicago kept a younger group, including rookie Zavion Thomas. A practice-squad role keeps a familiar veteran in the building and gives the Bears a call-up option if injuries hit the wideout room.

Miller was a sixth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and won Super Bowl LV with Tom Brady. He has 99 receptions for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns in 93 career games with Tampa Bay, Atlanta and Pittsburgh. His best season was 2020, when he had 33 catches for 501 yards and three scores.

Practice squads can be assembled after the waiver period. Miller joins a group of cuts Chicago is bringing back, including names such as Salvon Ahmed and Jack Sanborn in early reports.

For a local veteran who made the jump from tryout to camp, the practice squad is a second chance to stay in Halas Hall through the regular season.
