Rhamondre Stevenson passing Damien Harris as Patriots' top RB?

Rhamondre Stevenson could be on a fast track to overtaking Damien Harris as Patriots' top running back.

"Along with his growing role as a receiver, it wouldn’t shock me if [Stevenson] eventually leapfrogs Harris and becomes New England’s top early-down option," NESN's Zack Cox wrote Friday.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters in August that Stevenson has "done a real good job" improving as a receiver, which is typically a key to more playing time in New England.

Stevenson made a great impression as a rookie in 2021, rushing for 606 yards and five touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry. He only caught 14 passes out of the backfield, leading to irregular usage behind Harris, but improved receiving skills would give Stevenson an asset Harris doesn't have.

Harris had 929 yards and 132 receiving last season.

According to FantasyPros, Harris' average draft position is 30th among all running backs in fantasy leagues. Stevenson sits at 36th. That could shift quickly if positive reports on Stevenson continue to roll in.

This wouldn't be the first time we've seen the Patriots quickly pivot from a young running back. Harris rapidly overtook Sony Michel on the depth chart in 2020, and Michel was off the roster by Week 1 in 2021.

Fantasy owners might be justified in taking Stevenson earlier than expected.
