Rich Eisen anoints Trey Lance as potential ‘solve’ at quarterback for Minnesota Vikings
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Nobody does the NFL Combine quite like Rich Eisen. Not only does he broadcast the entire event but Eisen also has time to have conversations with some of the league’s coaches and executives. This leads him to break down some of the top rumors to come out of Indianapolis, with one potentially catching the eye of Cowboys and Vikings fans.

Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell believes Kirk Cousins will go through the free agency process, potentially leaving the franchise without a quarterback. This could mean the Vikings are looking on the trade market and Eisen believes Trey Lance, the current Dallas third-string, could be an option.

“A possible solve at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings is a native of the state and his name is Trey Lance,” Eisen said. “Trey Lance is a possible solve for the Vikings. Now, the Cowboys kept him on the roster long enough to get a bonus. So they’re paying money to keep him. And as you know, they got him for a five. I’m just wondering if the Vikings flip them a three. A Friday night pick? Do they go ahead and do that?”

Minnesota does not currently have a third-round pick but does own two in the fourth. No. 109 and No. 130 could theoretically be used to trade for Lance. Dallas certainly could use the draft capital considering they only have three picks inside of the top 150.

Adding another quality pick for what is their third-string quarterback could be a solid move for the Cowboys and Jerry Jones.

Eisen pointed out how Lance has a fifth-year option decision upcoming. He just wrapped up his third season in the NFL after being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Dallas is already paying Lance around $4.5 million to be on the 2024 roster but is likely to decline the option and see him hit free agency next offseason.
