Rich Eisen believes it’s time to panic about the Houston Texans after their disastrous start

The Houston Texans are the only team this century to reach the playoffs after starting 0-3, but NFL analyst Rich Eisen believes there is a significant cause for concern this year.

Only six teams in NFL history have made the playoffs after starting 0-3, with the 2018 Houston Texans the last team to do it, and the first to do so since the Buffalo Bills in 1998.

The Texans turned around the 0-3 start into 11-5, winning the AFC South in Deshaun Watson’s second year in the NFL. They lost in the wildcard round, however.

NFL analysts expressed concern about C.J. Stroud in the new Texans offense after the loss to the Buccaneers, and those concerns have only grown after the latest loss to the Jaguars.

There is a fear that the Texans are wasting Stroud’s rookie deal, considering they are averaging 12.6 points per game. Rich Eisen has explained why these issues are not solvable in the short term.

Rich Eisen explains why the Houston Texans should be panicking after 0-3 start

The Houston Texans’ offense has come under heavy criticism this season, averaging the lowest points per game in the NFL under new OC Nick Caley.

While the Texans’ defense is widely respected, just like it was in 2024, their offensive line is objectively worse than it was last season despite their attempts to revamp it.

GM Nick Caserio drafted OT Aireontae Ersery in the second round to replace Laremy Tunsil, which is not a particularly strong investment for a starting left tackle. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Here is what Eisen said: “You should definitely panic about the Texans. When you’re 0 and 3, that’s a significant disadvantage. I believe the 2018 Texans are the only 0-3 team this century to make the playoffs.

“So, that’s not good. And you take a look at the way that their offense is run. Nick Chubb can give you a burst here and there, but he doesn’t appear to be the 25-carry time of possession monster type running back that Nick Chubb has been or that the Texans would need.

“Certainly, since they’re having trouble protecting their quarterback up front, who clearly is feeling the pass rush. It just looks pretty, pretty bad.

“Defensively, they’re terrific, but the points are not there. The running game’s not there. The protection for the quarterback’s not there. The passing game’s not there.

“So 0 and 3 I would be concerned about just on its own, but there is a 3 and 0 team in the division as well. So, we’re kind of looking over the steering wheel at how fast the Texans can dig themselves out of their hole if they have the ability to do it. And if so, are we talking wild card?”

If they do somehow make the wildcard spot, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them exit like they did in 2018.

Houston Texans or Tennessee Titans will end their winless record in Week 4

Two of the NFL’s six winless teams are set to end that streak in Week 4, and the Houston Texans could be one of them.

The Texans face AFC South rivals, the Tennessee Titans, who are also winless to start the year, with rookie and first overall pick Cam Ward at the helm.

The two other winless teams that could see that streak end are the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins in another divisional matchup, only in the AFC East.

In 2018, the Texans began to turn their season around against an AFC South division rival, only then it was the Indianapolis Colts in a stunning 37-33 overtime win.

However, they face a remarkably tough test the week after against the Baltimore Ravens that might prove a pivotal stumbling block towards a winning record this year.
