The New York Giants named rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart their starting quarterback this week, and veteran Russell Wilson heads to the bench.
After an 0-3 start to the 2025 season, New York Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll named Jaxson Dart the starting quarterback. Russell Wilson struggled in Week 3 and now heads to the bench, and his former teammate Richard Sherman gave his thoughts on the news.
Richard Sherman and Darius Slay discuss ‘what can you do for me now’ mentality in the NFL, as Russell Wilson gets benched
Just a week ago, Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns in a thriller against the Dallas Cowboys. The performance was just two yards short of his career-high total, but the Giants were unable to secure the win in overtime.
The New York Giants then faced Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football in Week 3, but this time around Russell Wilson and the offense struggled to move the football.
That performance, plus an uncomfortable-looking red zone trip at the end of the game, ultimately cost Russell Wilson his job.
Daboll and the Giants will now turn their attention to developing Jaxson Dart as the franchise quarterback, and the rookie will start in Week 4 against the LA Chargers. The decision led to mixed reactions from the fan base, especially given the opposition.

Richard Sherman won a Super Bowl with Russell Wilson in Seattle, and spoke about the change with Darius Slay on his podcast.
“The Giants named Jaxson Dart their starting quarterback this week, replacing Russell Wilson after a bit of a struggle in the last game. I’m not sure what he did on that red zone drive, that sequence of plays was a head scratcher.”
Sherman continued: “Daboll, you’re coaching for your job right now. You sit him too long, you won’t ever get to see him play, and you’ll watch somebody else coach him. You have to make the move sooner or later. This is a tough matchup, the Chargers are a good team… but they feel like the kid can be prepared.”
Sherman and Slay discussed the crushing reality of the league, given Wilson’s performance just a week earlier.
Slay said:
“It’s kind of crazy that my boy went from throwing for 500 the week before, four days later, they wash their hands with you. That’s what I’ve been telling people about the business man, it’s what you do for me now.”
Dart has a tough schedule coming up, starting with a matchup against Jim Harbaugh and the 3-0 LA Chargers in Week 4. He’ll then play the New Orleans Saints before a tough stretch of games that sees the New York Giants face the Philadelphia Eagles twice in three weeks, with a game against the Denver Broncos in between.
Mina Kimes suggested Dart will need to be patient against the Chargers, moving the football efficiently against Jesse Minter’s impressive defense.

Quite the litmus test for Jaxson Dart. And I wouldn't want it any other way. #NYGiants pic.twitter.com/3sgtR416U7
The New York Giants signed two veteran quarterbacks in the offseason before drafting Jaxson Dart, and now that he’s going to start, they’ll both be riding the bench.
Jameis Winston is a tremendous locker room presence, and the Giants seem reluctant to consider trading him. However, if Russell Wilson is unhappy with the decision to bench him, and still feels he can start somewhere else, there’s a shot he gets traded before the deadline.
His current contract makes him relatively easy to trade, given that he is signed to a one-year, $10.5 million deal. The Cincinnati Bengals would be a prime location, and if any other team has an injury to their starter, Wilson’s name will surely be mentioned.
