Rico Dowdle’s Fantasy Outlook Takes Shape With Steelers Move

Set to officially hit free agency on March 11, Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle agreed to a two-year, $12.25 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers after posting eerily consistent, back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. He ran for 1,076 yards and six touchdowns with Carolina in 2025, which gives the Steelers a proven early-down option and familiar face for new head coach Mike McCarthy.

Dowdle will join a backfield with Jaylen Warren, who signed an extension before the 2025 season, and sophomore Kaleb Johnson coming off a forgettable rookie campaign. Warren handled 211 carries for 958 yards while adding 38 catches for 310 yards last year. Pittsburgh opted for Dowdle after losing Kenneth Gainwell to Tampa Bay, so this looks more like a backfield reshuffle than a clear handoff to one runner.

How to Value Rico Dowdle in Fantasy Drafts

Dowdle’s fit points to consistent volume, though not a featured role. He should compete for carries right away and probably rotate short-yardage work, but Warren still profiles as the more established all-around option and third-down choice.

For fantasy football, Dowdle has a matchup-based flex floor with RB2 utility, while Warren takes a hit from the added competition after already ceding ground to Gainwell down the stretch last year. Warren is an RB4 target on draft day, and the Dowdle signing tells us everything we need to know about how the Steelers view Johnson.

One factor that could radically impact this is if Aaron Rodgers does not return, so we'll reassess if something dramatic happens.
