Rival NFL Coaches Reveal View On Cowboys Schotty Hire

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has consistently emphasized one key message for the team heading into next season—culture. Schottenheimer is working towards harboring an environment that focuses on communication and competition.

And so far, from inside the building?

Cowboys players have enjoyed the approach Schottenheimer and his coaching staff are taking towards building relationships with them, with quarterback Dak Prescott saying he’s “doing a hell of a job.”

How does the rest of the league feel about Schottenheimer being head coach of the Cowboys?

"Schottenheimer is honestly one of the most well-liked coaches in the NFL," Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote. "He’s affable, a connector and 100 percent projects as a guy who could be a better head coach than he was a coordinator because of his natural leadership qualities. He’s also done good work with quarterbacks, even if his time as a play-calling coordinator mostly came years ago (2006 to ’11 with the New York Jets, ’12 to ’14 with the Rams and ’18 to ’20 with the Seahawks)."

The Cowboys did not cast a wide net in their search for a head coach, formally meeting with only three other "outside'' candidates—Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, and New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore.

Dallas believes they found the right man for the job in Schottenheimer, who was already on staff under the departed Mike McCarthy and who brings strong NFL pedigree as the son of Marty Schottenheimer, a head coach in the National Football League for 21 seasons.

"His personality should also help him navigate the unique power structure in Dallas, which is a big factor in the success of any head coach with the Cowboys," Breer added about Schottenheimer.

In other words, "get along with Jerry Jones.''

Again, so far, so good.

Schottenheimer will look to put last season in the rearview mirror and lead the Cowboys back to the playoffs. With a talented roster at his disposal, the Schottenheimer era has the potential to be a successful one for the Cowboys. ... if his colleagues are right about him.
