While multiple reports suggest it’s merely a matter of time before the Dallas Cowboys sign elite edge rusher Micah Parsons to a lucrative contract extension, there are some who believe Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is making a mistake by not being more proactive.
This wouldn’t be the first time contract negotiations have been a summer distraction for the Cowboys. It wasn’t until late last August when they signed star receiver CeeDee Lamb to a new deal. Parsons, a Pro Bowler in each of his first four years, has said all the right things. He was at the team’s recent minicamp and said he will not be holding out when training camp begins next month — though he did hint that he might not be a full participant if a new deal isn’t in place.
Parsons is confident that will happen in due time, and it will likely be a deal that resets the market, but one rival scout thinks the team is setting itself up for a difficult negotiation with Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta.
“It’s time to pay Micah Parsons,” this anonymous scout told Athlon Sports. “Slighting his agent is a power play from Jerry Jones that could wind up costing him even more money. There’s no question that Parsons deserves to be one of the highest-paid non-quarterbacks.”
Those comments were made as part of the exclusive Cowboys scouting report in the Athlon Sports 2025 NFL Preview magazine, available online and at newsstands now.
Mulugheta represents several NFL star players, including Jalen Ramsey, Jordan Love and Budda Baker. Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett reset the market with a new deal in March that pays him just over $40 million a year. With that number in place, Parsons’ deal shouldn’t be hard to work out. The longer it takes, the more distraction there will be at training camp.
The 26-year-old Parsons has 52.5 career sacks in four seasons after recording 12 last year, and he’s not the only threat the Cowboys have in their pass rush.
“Osa Odighizuwa got paid handsomely for his skill as an inside pass-rusher,” said the rival scout. “Dante Fowler Jr. has a knack for getting to the quarterback. … Rookie edge Donovan Ezeiruaku is a bit undersized, but it’s impossible to ignore his production at Boston College.”
The rival scout also had good things to say about a trio of Dallas cornerbacks:
“DaRon Bland is going to earn himself a payday if he keeps it up,” he said. “Getting Trevon Diggs back (he missed seven games in 2024 with a knee injury) would give the Cowboys an elite corner. … Shavon Revel Jr. should be ready by training camp after tearing his ACL in his final college season at East Carolina.”
