Thursday marked the end of an era for the NFL place-kicking fraternity as Chicago Bears legend Robbie Gould announced his retirement on Instagram.
Gould's announcement closes the book on a storied career. Before signing with the Bears in 2005, the Penn State alum was working construction in Pennsylvania.
"From start to finish, I loved everything about my time in Chicago," Gould wrote for The Players' Tribune. "... We had some deep playoff runs, and we made a ton of memories. The McCaskey family gave me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream, and it was an honor to play for them. Ultimately, I hope that we made Bears fans proud. They deserve it."
During his 10-year stint with the Bears, Gould set the franchise record by scoring 1,207 points for the team. Kevin Butler, the kicker for the team's only Super Bowl-winning squad, holds second place with 1,116 points.
But Gould's career unfortunately didn't conclude with the Bears. After a rather unceremonious release following the 2015 season, Gould spent a season with the Giants before playing out the final six seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers.
As of this writing, Gould is 10th all-time in NFL scoring and retires to the city he loves: Chicago. He and his wife, along with their three children, will likely be mainstays at Bears games going forward as the former construction worker turned all-time great kicker pens the next chapter of his life.
