Robert Griffin III: Commanders have their 'most dynamic' offense in last decade

This is just Griffin’s latest praise for his former team. Last month, he called the Commanders a “surprise Super Bowl contender” while appearing on ESPN’s "NFL Live."

Griffin appears very high on quarterback Carson Wentz. It’s a stark contrast from other pundits. Washington acquired Wentz in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts. It’s the second consecutive offseason Wentz has been traded.

Some say this is Wentz’s final chance to prove he is a viable NFL starter, including Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. His struggles with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts have been highlighted by many. However, Wentz may be surrounded by the most talented offense of his NFL career. 

Washington drafted former Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson in the first round this year. The rookie will play alongside veteran wideouts Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel. The team will need to sign McLaurin to a contract extension to end his holdout, however.

Washington also drafted former Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr. to pair with Antonio Gibson in the backfield, not to mention, dynamic third-down back in J.D. McKissic.

At tight end, Washington will have to wait on Logan Thomas, who is coming off a torn ACL, to return, but he’s shown he is a dynamic pass catcher. The Commanders also added rookie Cole Turner through the draft to the tight end room.

The Commanders are confident in their offensive line, with veteran left tackle Charles Leno Jr. and second-year right tackle Sam Cosmi. They added veterans Trai Turner and Andrew Norwell at center and will be even more solid once center Chase Roullier returns from his leg injury.

In the past 10 seasons, the Commanders have had a top-10 offense three times — twice with Griffin as the quarterback (2012, 2013). The other time was 2016 with Kirk Cousins at quarterback. 

Two of those seasons (2012, 2016) Washington won the NFC East division title. However, in 2013, the Commanders finished 3-13, which led to the firing of head coach Mike Shanahan.

Surely, the Commanders’ success hinges on Wentz. Through all the criticism in recent years, one thing to remember is Wentz has thrown for 27 touchdowns against seven interceptions in two of the last three seasons.
