Former ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III is keeping a longtime "SportsCenter" anchor in his prayers this week.
Griffin was laid off by ESPN before the start of the 2024 season. His role on "Monday Night Countdown" was replaced by former Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce. The former Heisman Trophy winner said he was surprised by the network's decision.
"To say I was surprised [about getting fired], I had already been assigned a team, Rich, for college football. I was going to be back with my [broadcast team]. ... It hurt me for them, not because they need me because they don't," Griffin said. "That's the thing about this business—nobody needs anyone. But just because we were so close, and we were kind of getting the chance to rekindle that fire. That had already been assigned."
Even though Griffin isn't part of the ESPN family anymore, he's keeping "SportsCenter" anchor Jay Harris in his thoughts.
On Thursday morning, Harris revealed that he's been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
"I’m having surgery on Tuesday," Harris said. "I'll be away from 'SportsCenter' for about a month to recover. Then I'm coming back better than ever."
After Harris shared this unfortunate news on "Good Morning America," he received a ton of support from current and former ESPN employees. Although they're no longer on the same team, Griffin made it clear he's got nothing but love for Harris.
"Praying for a full recovery my brother," Griffin wrote on X.
Thankfully, the prognosis for Harris is "quite good." If all goes well, he'll be back on "SportsCenter" this summer.
"Per my last scan nothing has spread, so once we take out the prostate, hopefully that will be it," Harris added. "That's the goal."
Sports fans around the world are wishing Harris all the best in his battle against cancer.
