Robert Griffin III Wants to See a Special Red Zone Package for Justin Fields
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers certainly have options with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields as their quarterbacks in 2024. While Wilson is in pole position to be the starter, many think Fields will supplant him sooner rather than later. Fields is 10 years younger and has more upside.

If Wilson remains the starter, however, the Steelers could implement a run-game package with Fields. It would be another dimension that defensive coordinators have to prepare for. Since 2022, Fields has the most rushing yards by a quarterback with 1,800 yards, 6.3 yards per carry. Both figures are higher than Lamar Jackson’s.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III threw the idea out there that the Steelers should utilize Fields’ talents in the red zone and create a special package. Griffin calls it the “Field Zone Package”.

“The @steelers should create a red zone package for Justin Fields and call it the “Field Zone Package”. They can utilize his dynamic ability with RPOs, boots, keepers and nakeds to stretch the defense while utilizing him and Russell Wilson to the fullest this year,” Griffin said.

“This year [Mike Tomlin] doesn’t have just one, but two dynamic quarterbacks that bring an element of playmaking with their style of play. So that’s what I wanna see the Pittsburgh Steelers utilize Russell Wilson and Justin Fields at the same time. How do you do it? You create a red zone package for Justin Fields. Allow him to use his athleticism and his running ability to punch in touchdowns.”

Fields spoke with the media for the first time since being traded to the Steelers in March, and he declared that he has no intentions of sitting on the bench all year.

“I definitely don’t have the mindset of me just sitting all year. I’m coming in here every day giving it all I got and pushing him to be his best, and he’s pushing me to be my best every single day,” Fields said.

Tomlin has repeatedly stated throughout the offseason that Wilson is in “pole position” to be the starting quarterback, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a true QB competition. Wilson is fully aware that he won’t just be given the starting position.

“I think every day you look to be the best version of you,” Wilson said. “I think that’s always the competition internally, and then you’re always competing against the other, 31 other teams, and so I think that you step on the field with that mentality. Nothing should ever change. So, that’s how I’ve always looked at it. And that’s the part I embrace.”
