The NFL offseason often leads to potential changes in how the game of football is played on the field, as well as in how things are handled behind the scenes.
Recently, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell shared that there were discussions centered around the current salary cap system in the league. From the way he was talking, it seems that owners want to ensure the playing field is as level as possible across the board in the NFL. Many people around the league believe he is referring specifically to how some teams utilize the void year loophole to construct contracts, and if that loophole is removed, teams like the Indianapolis Colts would likely rejoice.

Void years are a way for some owners who have more cash than the majority of their league counterparts to pay big-time players without their cap hit reflecting the size of the contract signed by the player. The Colts have used the void year loophole here and there, but for the most part, they haven't been willing to go down that route as much as we've seen teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, for example.
If this is removed from the NFL, it will significantly impact the ability of many top-tier teams to keep their rosters together over time. It will be harder to pay everyone when the time comes. If that benefit is taken away from the highest net worth owners, then teams like the Colts will have a better shot at competing during free agency in future years. This change hasn't been officially announced as something the league will make in the near future. However, I'm sure the Colts and many other owners would support this rule change if it were presented at future meetings.
