Roger Goodell Shows True Character With NYPD Gesture

Back in July, a police officer and three others were shot and killed by a gunman inside a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. The gunman reportedly wanted to target the NFL headquarters.

Exactly three months later, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell showed his compassion for the late Det. Didarul Islam and his family. He presented scholarships to Islam's three children at the 47th Precinct this Tuesday.

Goodell referred to Islam as a "hero" and someone who was a friend to all of his neighbors.

"Detective Islam was a hero to us," Goodell said, via the New York Post. "He was somebody that we all knew as a friend, as a neighbor. And it’s an honor to be here with his family that I know meant so much to him. And also to understand the impact that he had on so many.  And this is what true first responders and true heroes do. They run to the fire, they run to the emergency. They run to help. With no questions asked."

The scholarships that Goodell presented Tuesday will cover educational costs for Islam's young children.

The Islam family thanks the NFL.

Islam’s brother-in-law, police officer Kamrul Husan, thanked Goodell and the NFL for this heartfelt gesture.

"It was on Islam’s mind all the time, how’s he going to cover his [sons] education, he was thinking about good education systems," Husan said. "Now the NFL stood up for the kids, that means a lot to the family. Now the family doesn’t have to worry about that, his kids education. This is great, this is really appreciated."

Islam's 5-year-old son, Azhaan, said at Tuesday's ceremony that he wants to become a police officer someday.

Our thoughts remain with the Islam family at this time.
