When the Tennessee Titans traded cornerback Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams, it impacted the Packers in more ways than merely missing out on a veteran who could fill one of the more glaring holes in coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense.
General manager Brian Gutekunst will now need to turn their attention elsewhere, if upgrading the secondary is in fact a top trade deadline priority.
McCreary landing with the Rams bolsters a secondary for a team Green Bay could be up against in the postseason, or for seeding should the Packers wind up in the NFC Wild Card race.
However, the Titans’ corresponding move hits the Packers right in the roster.
Tennessee has signed rookie cornerback Micah Robinson off the Packers’ practice squad, which takes a developmental prospect out of the building for Green Bay.
Green Bay originally chose Robinson in the seventh-round of this spring’s NFL Draft, and while he had yet to be elevated to the active roster, the Titans clearly believe he has enough upside to contribute immediately, after targeting him shortly after dealing away McCreary.
The Packers enter Week 9 of the regular season, ranking sixth in the NFL, allowing an average of 289.4 yards per game.
Upgrading at cornerback could be one of the few areas Gutekunst could look to shore up at the deadline, but losing Robinson adds a bit of injury to insult.
