Roman Wilson could be in a now-or-never situation amid injury concerns within the Pittsburgh Steelers' WR room

The Pittsburgh Steelers' WR room is on its last legs, with Mike Tomlin's weekly address likely to provide insight into how long Calvin Austin III will be out due to his shoulder injury. In the meantime, the Steelers used their bye week to get healthy at other positions, and perhaps more importantly, self-scout and get better.

That includes figuring out a role for Roman Wilson, who has struggled to touch the field. The last time the Steelers played a game, Wilson played just six percent of the team's offensive snaps. Only one of his snaps came with a passing play attached, and Wilson was used as a blocker.

But if Austin misses a game or two, the WR No. 2 role in Pittsburgh is up for grabs. It will be on Wilson to come down with it.

Roman Wilson Career Facts

  • Roman Wilson won a national championship with the Michigan Wolverines.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
  • Roman Wilson ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

It feels like now or never for Roman Wilson in Pittsburgh

"There's no 'Roman's in the dog house' or anything," Steelers WR coach Zach Azzanni told the media via Nick Farabaugh on Twitter-X after the Vikings game. "Roman's doing just fine. We just happen to be pretty good at TE and wide out, and what we're doing running the ball."

Wilson has played an average of just 19 percent of the Steelers' offensive snaps through the first month of the season. He has out-snapped Ben Skowronek and Scotty Miller in total, but he is almost always in on run plays or to block on screens. He has been targeted just twice and has only one reception for seven yards. The only catch of his two year career thus far.

Yet, the Steelers remain optimistic about Wilson and his future. League sources tell A to Z Sports that Wilson is held in high regard by the team, and they are treating this year as his rookie year after an injury-riddled inaugural campaign. He was attempting to jump on a moving train last season, to use a Tomlinism.

But now is the time. More than a month into year two and with an extra week of preparation behind him, Wilson is next in line. There is no reason why he should be behind Miller or Skowronek in the pecking order at WR No. 2.

So one thing about this situation is very clear. If the Steelers don't use Wilson going forward, amid injury to their second-best option on the perimeter and low tight end usage, the questions will only continue to grow, as will the noise.
